Over the next few days, Macon-Bibb County is preparing for a significant winter weather event that could greatly impact our community, particularly those experiencing homelessness.
According to EMA and the National Weather Service, we can expect a prolonged period of freezing or below temperatures starting Sunday and lasting through Thursday.
To address these conditions and safeguard our unhoused neighbors, extended cold weather activation protocols are in effect:
- Shelter Operations: Local shelters are maximizing capacity, extending warming hours, and implementing cold weather protocols to ensure access to safe, warm environments.
- Transportation and Overflow Services: We stand ready to activate transportation and overflow services as demand increases or conditions worsen.
- Continuous Monitoring: I will monitor shelter availability and capacities and community needs throughout the weather event to ensure resources are directed where they are most needed.
