Be a part of United Way of Central Georgia's largest community-wide volunteer day of the year. DAY OF ACTION is just around the corner. Join us on June 18th! 

This year we are focusing our efforts at Brookdale Resource Center. Brookdale serves as transitional housing and a resource center for the homeless population in Central Georgia.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

9:00 am - 11:00 pm

Join us and Keep Macon Bibb Beautiful for a neighborhood clean-up in the area surrounding Brookdale Resource Center. We want to give back to our neighbors!

Volunteers will be picking up debris in a designated area of the neighborhood. All supplies needed will be provided.

Volunteers will sweep and pressure wash the sidewalk, main entrance area, and shower area.

There is a small garden located behind Brookdale Resource Center from when it used to serve as an elementary school. 

We are seeking volunteers to clean-up this area and potentially add new plants or vegetables. Currently the garden consists of a few trees and raised planter boxes.

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Let's keep Macon (and Brookdale) beautiful by landscaping the front of the facility. 

Volunteer tasks include: laying sod, planting shrubbery, trimming small tress, and trimming shrubs.

School is out for the Summer which means the kids at Brookdale will be there more often during the day. Lend a hand to clean-up the playground and make it safe for families at Brookdale to utilize. 

Volunteers will pick weeds, rake, and spread mulch within the playground enclosure.

INDOOR ACTIVITIES

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Brookdale has established a Veterans Room to ensure that all veterans seeking their services will be provided a spot. There is an incomplete mural painted in this room. 

Volunteers will assist with adding final details to the mural and cleaning up the work that has previously been done. Paint and other materials will be provided.

9:00 am - 11:00 am

Currently all participants at Brookdale are enrolled in a 90-day program. This program has been a major success for many families and individuals. Brookdale plans to increase its impact by opening the gym as a space for those unable to enroll in their full program. To do so, the gym must be cleaned out and set-up for overnight stays. 

Volunteers will assist with clearing out old furniture and other items being stored in the gym. Volunteers will break down old shelving and dispose of them. Lastly, volunteers will thoroughly clean the gym floors.

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Brookdale is home to an average of 100 people at any given time. In order to sustain Brookdale's program and reach this many people, we need the help of volunteers at all times. We are searching for volunteers to assist with some general cleaning and disinfecting of some areas within the facility.

Volunteers will assist with cleaning the kitchen (including sweeping, mopping, and disinfecting surfaces). Then, volunteers will organize and sanitize items in the children’s playroom.

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Brookdale receives numerous donations to assist with their residents. Some residents come to Brookdale with minimal belongings. Donations of clothing which are stored in the facility are given to residents when needed. Residents can also make special requests when certain items are needed for work or a job interview. 

Volunteers will sort, fold, and label donations of men, women, and children's clothing.

9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Hygiene kits vary dependent on the type (men, women, and baby) and are given to residents of Brookdale when they arrive. Items often included are soap, shampoo, dental hygiene products, etc. 

Volunteers will prepare various hygiene kits for current and future Brookdale residents. This group will also assist with the linens closet by washing, folding, and sorting towels and bedding.

11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Lunch preparation begins at 11:30 am and is served at 12:00 pm. Volunteers will help with preparing and serving meals as well as cleaning the area once the meal has ended.

Dinner preparation begins at 4:30 pm and is served at 5:00 pm. Volunteers will help with preparing and serving meals as well as cleaning the area once the meal has ended.

Volunteer with Read United

Read United, together with the volunteers of our community, aims to close achievement gaps, increase graduation rates, and disrupt the cycle of poverty through two tutor-based programs: AARP Foundation Experience Corps and Read2Succeed.
If you’re looking for a recurring volunteer opportunity, Read United is a great option. Read United volunteers commit to tutoring 1-4 hours a week. The program runs early September to late April. For more information, about Read United check out their page.
