As temperatures drop, United to End Homelessness highlights efforts with local providers

shelter preparation

United to End Homelessness continues to monitor the forecasted weather with Macon-Bibb EMA and is acting in concert with the Macon Homeless Coalition to address the needs of our unhoused neighbors.

Through our partnership with Macon-Bibb County and the Macon Homeless Coalition, United Way has worked to increase the number of emergency shelter beds, arrange free transportation in partnership with MTA, and establish a meal service schedule for our unhoused neighbors. There is an urgent need for volunteers and supplies to be able to provide these expanded services.

Holiday Supportive Services and Safe Housing Options

Brookdale and the Salvation Army currently have very few open beds remaining as more people check in to the facilities.

In response to these conditions, our county's shelter system has expanded warming capacity at both the Salvation Army and Brookdale Resource Center. These 70 additional warming beds will provide critical capacity in addition to the routine shelter services provided. United to End Homelessness advises our unhoused neighbors to take advantage of these additional services.

Both the Salvation Army and Brookdale Resource Center are in need of volunteers and supplies.

The Salvation Army needs blankets, pillows, deodorant, body wash, socks, and snacks. Salvation Army volunteers are needed to help package hygiene packages, welcome packages, snacks, and lunches. For more information on volunteering with the Salvation Army, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Mrs. Carol Wylie at 478-746-8572 extension 132.

The Brookdale Resource Center urgently needs new or gently used blankets and throws, as well as individual hygiene products. There is a need for volunteers on Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. To volunteer, call 478-292-5123.

Transportation

Given these record-breaking conditions, United to End Homelessness has partnered with the Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority to offer essential transportation to the community. Beginning 12:00 noon, Thursday, December 22 through Saturday, December 24 at 4:10 p.m. all rides are free to the public.

According to MTA CEO Craig Ross, “MTA is happy to offer free bus service across all our routes as people complete their work week and last-minute shopping. Public transportation is vital to our riders for many reasons, and we are pleased to ease their burden as the holiday approaches, and everyone is faced with plummeting temperatures.”

Holiday Meals & Routine Service Schedule

Our unhoused neighbors are supported year-round by the Macon-Bibb County Coalition to End Homelessness, a network of essential providers. In Central Georgia, these organizations provide food, resources, medical care, and emergency shelter to our region's most vulnerable.

"This is what communal compassion looks like: faith communities, nonprofits and local government working together to shelter the most vulnerable. We are grateful to Salvation Army, Daybreak, Macon Rescue Mission, and Brookdale Resource Center, and so many other providers, for their dedication," says United to End Homelessness Executive Director, Rev. Dr. Jake Hall. “This holiday season, we appreciate the time and effort our essential service providers provide to those in need."
