File Your Taxes for Free with United Way of Central Georgia

Georgia has an estimated 159,000 children who are at risk of missing out on the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) and other economic relief payments. In Georgia, expanding the Child Tax Credit (CTC) payments could reduce child poverty by half.

Every year in Central Georgia, hardworking, moderate-to low-income families lack access to certified and IRS trained tax preparers and fail to claim important tax credits. Even worse, many fall prey to predatory tax preparation organizations that erroneously do not file for all the credits available, but also charge onerous preparation fees and/or exorbitant rates for refund advances.

"The expanded Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit, along with stimulus payments, mean that more people than ever need to file a tax return to get the money to which they are entitled," said United Way of Central Georgia President and CEO George McCanless. “Making sure everyone receives their full refund benefits both the family and our community, as these dollars are then spent with local businesses.”

In partnership with the IRS, United Way of Central Georgia leads a coalition to provide free tax preparation by IRS-trained and certified volunteers. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) coalition provides free tax preparation services and asset building resources to working families with moderate to low incomes.

This tax preparation is available to individuals who generally make $57,000 or less, people with disabilities or limited English speaking abilities, or to those who are 60 years of age or older. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

You can also file your taxes online yourself for free! United Way has made MyFreeTaxes available to over 100 million U.S. taxpayers as part of our fight for the financial stability of every person in every community. MyFreeTaxes has been helping taxpayers who qualify to easily and accurately file both federal and state tax returns electronically since 2009. In that time, MyFreeTaxes has helped taxpayers claim nearly $2 billion in refunds and save $260 million in filing fees. This year, MyFreeTaxes is available in both English and Spanish.

The 211 helpline continues to offer live help in more than 150 languages in order to assist U.S. taxpayers with finding free tax preparation. MyFreeTaxes users can also contact 2-1-1 for additional resources or contact United Way of Central Georgia to find ways to volunteer to support their community.
