My relationship with the United Way of Central Georgia goes back about a decade when I began serving as a campaign volunteer calling on area businesses, organizations to encourage their support and participation. I can tell you that it was an easy story to tell.
Over the ensuing years, as I served in a variety of other roles in the United Way of Central Georgia, my appreciation for the organization and what it means to the community has grown.
The United Way truly makes a difference in the daily lives of countless citizens in Central Georgia. That includes the lives of those who are served by the agencies and the programs supported by the United Way of Central Georgia and the lives of those who volunteer for the organization. It is in many ways the lifeline of our community.
Last year, under the leadership of campaign chair Spencer Strickland, our campaign raised $5,042,283. Two years ago, we cracked the $5 million mark for the first time.
When we factored in the needs of our community combined with the great work the campaign cabinet has been doing over the last few weeks, as well as the positive feedback we have received from employers during our campaign visits, we are setting this year's goal at $5.1 million. This would be the most ever generated, another record, and certainly a stretch for us.
But I'm confident that one by one, we can work together to improve the lives of our children and the thousands of citizens that need our support.
We can reach this goal. I'm counting on it.
