Hundreds of local residents, community leaders and GEICO associates attended a thank-you event at the GEICO office in Macon as the company and its associates were named United Way of Central Georgia’s top contributor for the 10th year in a row, pledging $1,023,330 during the 2013 United Way campaign. Mayor Robert Reichert attended the event and read a proclamation announcing February 19 as GEICO Appreciation Day.
“GEICO has a very positive impact on Macon-Bibb County at many levels, and the success of their United Way Campaign deserves high praise and celebration,” says Mayor Robert Reichert. “Many people and organizations will greatly benefit from the giving nature of the people at GEICO.”
GEICO is the first company campaign in central Georgia to ever top the $1 million mark. GEICO associates raised $845,330 and their corporate gift was $178,000. Their total campaign raised more than $100,000 over last year’s campaign for a 12 percent increase.
“The generosity and commitment of GEICO employees are amazing,” said 2013 United Way Campaign Chair Theresa Robinson, regional external affairs manager for Georgia Power Company. “GEICO’s campaign results continue to increase each year, which means that more than 100,000 local Georgians will get the assistance they need.”
George McCanless, president and CEO of United Way of Central Ga. expressed his gratitude and said, “GEICO is such an important part of our region. Not only are they the largest employer other than the base, but their campaign
success highlights their commitment to helping those in need. We could not have the impact we have in our community without them. They have more than doubled their campaign over the past ten years.”
"On behalf of the thousands of GEICO associates who gave so selflessly to contribute over $1 million to the United Way fundraising effort this year, we are grateful and honored to accept a Key to the City of Macon," said Scott Markel, regional vice president of GEICO's Midwest operations. "GEICO celebrates its 40-year anniversary as a vital part of the Macon family this year, and we are proud that our associates and our company are able to give back to a community that has been so important to us for so many wonderful years."
GEICO's Southeastern Regional Vice President Rhett Rayburn also expressed his appreciation for United Way and GEICO campaign coordinators Shane Maddox, Jessica Brown and Gita Jones.
"I appreciate the dedication and leadership of our employee committee," said Rayburn. "I think this speaks volumes about the partnership between GEICO and the Macon community, and the fact that our associates gave so generously speaks volumes about our associates. This is an amazing milestone that we have met and I am so proud of all our associates.”
