Helping Children and Youth Succeed

What We Know:
Children need safe and nurturing environments in which to gain self-confidence, learn life skills, demonstrate appropriate behaviors, and make good decisions. The indicators of their success begin at birth and continue throughout their childhood into adolescence.  United way helps children and youth be safe, healthy, educated, employable and connected to their community.

What Matters:

  • Children enrolled in quality child care programs perform better in school, are less likely to become pregnant or commit juvenile crime, and have less risk of dropping out of school.  96.7% of the children in United Way funded child care programs performed at age-appropriate levels after one year.

  • 68% of children and youth involved in United Way funded programs gained self-confidence, which contributed to 61% of them improving their academic performance and behaviors.

  • United Way funded programs helped over 4,000 youth learn prevention skills to avoid engaging in risky behaviors and make better decisions.  For example, nearly 91% of youth in two programs reported that they had abstained from sexual activity, drugs and alcohol and made better decisions as a result of what they learned.
