United Way Announces Dramatic Increase For Local Agencies/Exceeds Goal!
Today, United Way officials reported that the organization will distribute more than $3 million to its local partner agencies during its next program funding year that begins on April 1, 2010. “We are very pleased to be in a position to increase funding to our current partner agencies by approximately 10% compared to last year’s amount,” said United Way Board of Trustees Chair Scott Sapp, market president of Wachovia Bank. “As we speak, United Way trustees are in the process of determining individual agency allocation amounts based on a thorough review of our communities’ greatest needs, agencies’ funding requests, and identifying programs to fund what we believe will achieve measurable results in helping needy individuals and families in our communities.”
“In addition to increasing funds for our partner agencies, we are announcing today that United Way will provide a “Road to Recovery” grant in the amount of $300,000 to Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Middle Georgia, Inc. The purpose of the “Road to Recovery” initiative is to help 300 local families save their homes from foreclosure. 100% of the funds will go directly to qualified families, as determined by Consumer Credit Counseling, in the form of direct financial assistance. I would urge local individuals and families who are threatened with the prospects of foreclosures to contact Consumer Credit Counseling Services at 745-6197 to get details about eligibility. I would be remiss not to thank The Peyton Anderson Foundation for their generous challenge grant of $150,000 to help make this important initiative possible.”
Sapp added, “We are able to provide this dramatic increase in funding due to the success of our 2009 Campaign led by 2009 Campaign Chairman Jim Manley, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank and with a boost from United Way’s reserve fund. United Way of Central Georgia has effectively built a healthy reserve fund during good economic times, and our Board of Trustees believes this is an appropriate year to use $325,000 of our reserves to help provide more services to central Georgians.”
“We are pleased to report that we will exceed our goal of $4,225,000 and are projecting to top $4,270,000 when all results are in,” said Manley. “We knew from the beginning of the campaign in early 2009 that making our goal would be a huge challenge due to the difficult economic conditions. Our success is a tribute to the heroic efforts of our campaign volunteer leaders, but more particularly it is a testament to the extraordinary generosity of the thousands of companies and individuals who support United Way’s mission of changing lives and strengthening communities. I’d like to especially thank our number one campaign in the region, GEICO and its employees, who contributed $838, 429. I’d also like to join Scott in thanking The Peyton Anderson Foundation for their generous gift.”
