Promoting Health, Wellness & Safety
What We Know:
United Way promotes quality of life for Central Georgians by: providing health care for the working uninsured; helping those whose lives have been devastated by a natural disaster like floods or fire; providing a safe haven and a new start for victims of violence or abuse; and responding to people seeking information on health and human services available in our community.
Our agency programs help with the process of physical and emotional healing; providing help in coping with an addiction; family reunification and support for children who have been abused or neglected. Our families are nurtured through programs that give parents the chance to support each other through the demands of raising young children and with the transition of bringing a new baby into the family.
What Matters:
- Senior citizens receiving nutritional services improved their quality of life: 83% had improved nutritional health; 63.5% were able to live independently; and, because they had proper nutrition, 69.5% did not have to access medical attention or be hospitalized.
- In order to be safe, individuals especially women and children must be educated on preventing sexual assault, child abuse and other victimizations. 92% of the children in child abuse prevention classes demonstrated an increase in their knowledge of body safety. Thanks to programs for women with substance abuse problems, women and children were reunited, and mothers learned how to protect and parent their children and themselves.
