FEEL OUR GAIN

Too often charitable organizations focus their appeals to donors exclusively on the pain and suffering of the individuals the organization is promising to serve. Clearly, many of the individuals and families served by our United Way and its partner agencies are suffering, particularly during these tough economic times. But our message is that all of us have so much to gain by supporting United Way and we are asking for your help in delivering that message.

We want central Georgians to hear about all of the good things that are being accomplished as a result of giving to United Way. Consider the following examples of lives being changed as a result of United Way supported services:

Virgenal McMichael grew up attending the Carl Thomas Boys & Girls Club. The youngest of three sons, Virginal did not have a positive male role model in his life. According to his mother, shortly after he started attending programs at the club, Virginal became a much more confident young man. The staff there did everything in their power to make sure Virgenal strived for excellence and challenged him not to settle but to pursue bigger challenges. Virgenal competed in the “Youth of the Year” competition last year and won! Virgenal will graduate from Central High School with honors in the International Baccalaureate Program and has received a scholarship to Georgia Tech. He plans to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering and then go on to medical school.

The Williams family recently faced the horrifying prospect of losing their home to foreclosure due to a loss of income caused by the poor economy. Thanks to United Way’s “Road to Recovery” program, they were able to get the financial assistance needed to save their home. We have committed up to $300,000 this year to help qualified families save their most valuable asset.

These are but a few of the thousands of lives being changed each and every day of the year by United Way agencies’ services. Of course, each individual served experiences an improvement in their life. But, the added value of United Way is that the entire community is strengthened and improved by the tens of thousands of lives being changed in profoundly positive ways.

We understand that corporate and individual donors want to feel good about their charitable gifts. We sincerely believe that United Way donors can feel good about the fact that their gifts are truly helping those who need our help most right here in our local communities. Better yet, United Way’s local Board of Trustees is laser-focused on ensuring that our donors’ funds are efficiently and effectively used to bring about positive change at the community level. Our main goal at United Way is to improve social conditions in our local communities so all of us gain a better place to raise our families and conduct our businesses.

So, I urge you to once again join with us and FEEL OUR GAIN by making a generous corporate contribution, and by conducting a spirited employee campaign.

Sincerely,

George McCanless
